Arquebus CEO Paul James and CTO Glenn Lawrence were quoted by the UK media last week regarding the threat posed by 3D printed firearms and military grade firearms trafficked from Ukraine to the UK’s national security.
Firearms are durable and modular goods, which circulate in both civilian and state possession. Firearms can also easily be disassembled and re-assembled, can lie dormant for years before being misused, and are frequently smuggled and trafficked across international borders.
Without accountability throughout the lifecycle of a firearm, or an accurate understanding of the firearms in circulation within a jurisdiction, other crucial elements of WAM such as marking, tracing and profiling, stockpile management and the collection and destruction of firearms are swiflty undermined.
Understanding these challenges, Arquebus maintains that a crucial tool for sustained and expansive progress in minimising the impact of SALW misuse upon human security is an effective national firearms registry.

One of the major international security implications arising from the conflict in Ukraine is how to manage the long-term threat posed by the proliferation of huge numbers of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW). Arquebus CEO Paul James discusses the parallels to his experience tackling firearms crime in the Western Balkans, making a call to action for a proactive security response.
Between the 8th and 10th of August 2022, Arquebus delivered Double Casting equipment and a 3-day training course to the Trinidad & Tobago Police Service (TTPS) at the Police Training Academy and the Forensic Science Centre located within Port of Spain, Trinidad.
The criminal misuse of SALW has become increasingly understood as a threat to collective security, with the illicit proliferation of SALW being recognised as a significant enabler for other criminal activities such as drug trafficking, whilst also engendering a perception of general insecurity which undermines public confidence in national authorities’ ability to secure populations (SOCTA, 2021).
