FireCycle is the world’s only specialist web-based firearms lifecycle tracking system designed to keep a comprehensive record of firearms within a nation’s borders.
FireCycle manages the who – who the firearm belongs to, who it has been assigned to, or what organisation has ownership of it. The what – the make, model, manufacturer and serial number of a firearm, standardised by the RCMP’s Firearms Reference Table. The where – the location of firearms whether owned by organisations or individuals. And finally, the when – the time and date that firearms change from one status to another. Each transaction step is recorded as a firearm goes from gun dealer to private ownership, from legal to stolen, from imported to registered.
Regulating firearms is one of the three essential principles of National Firearms Control.
FireCycle empowers Governments to regulate firearms in three distinct contexts, namely:
1. The registration of civilian firearms,
2. The lifecycle management of state firearm inventories (e.g., police forces, armed forces, and private security companies), and
3. The tracking of stolen, lost, recovered, confiscated and inactive firearms.
When registered firearms are used in crime, managing information from inside the gun (the unique markings left on discharged ammunition) and outside the gun (the make, model, manufacturer, and serial number) provides a comprehensive crime-gun information solution of tactical and strategic crime solving and prevention value. As such, FireCycle is designed to integrate with test fire programs using ABIS systems like IBIS and Evofinder.
FireCycle improves the capacity of public safety agencies to collect, search, share, and verify the information about stolen, lost, recovered, seized or legal firearms.
In turn, this allows Law Enforcement agencies to identify illegal arms trafficking flows and provides them with the information necessary to investigate local, national, and international firearm related crime.
To aid the international tracing of firearms, FireCycle exports lost/stolen/recovered firearm data in a format easily uploaded into international tracing databases, reducing the administrative overhead, speeding up the process, and increasing the chances of identifying gun trafficking.
Finally, FireCycle enables administrators and policy makers to collect crime-gun data, generate the information required to fully and accurately understand the extent to which guns are used in crimes within their jurisdictions, and quantify and identify the types and sources of those crime guns.
In essence, FireCycle bridges the gap between regulatory and crime databases for national and international crime-fighting initiatives designed to prevent the unlawful diversion of firearms and to take armed criminals off the streets.

The proliferation of SALW presents a complex risk to any country’s national security.
Proliferation to non-state actors subverts a state’s monopoly on the legitimate use of firearms whilst being particularly difficult to counter insofar as multiple criminals could misuse a firearm numerous times within a jurisdiction before the weapon is then trafficked elsewhere (SEESAC, 2017).
Following research conducted across Africa and South America, Arquebus has just published its latest thought paper on Firearms Lifecycle Management. This report highlights the challenges in the way that most countries approach firearms licensing and registration. Many countries misconstrue licensing for registration, so Arquebus explores the benefits of having separate, but complementary, systems that focus on the licensing of firearm users and the registration of the firearms themselves.
